Plan to erect telecommunications equipment on Cork apartment building roof turned down

A proposal to erect telecommunications equipment on the roof of a Cork City student apartment building has been turned down.
Local planners have refused permission to Vantage Towers Limited, which had sought to erect antennas, dishes, cabinets and other associated telecommunications equipment on the roof of the Nido Student Accommodation complex at Curraheen Point, Farranlea Road, Cork.
Planners said the development would be visible from the street and, as such, would be "visually incongruous" and lead to a "proliferation of telecommunications infrastructure in this visually prominent location".
They cited the "scale, height, design, and proximate location relative to existing dwellings" in the decision too.
The student complex at Curraheen Point is home to 140 students and is a 15-minute walk from both UCC and MTU.
Elsewhere, plans for a five-storey apartment building in Cork City have been unveiled.
Ballygifford Holdings Limited has lodged an application with Cork City Council for a site fronting onto York Street and Wellington Road in Cork City.
It has proposed the demolition and removal of existing structures on the site to facilitate the construction of a five- storey apartment building.
This would contain 14 apartments; eight one- bed and six two- bed units.
Bike and bin storage is included too, as well as a roof terrace and a courtyard.
