WHO’LL be in residence at 3 Lancaster Quay at the next census, likely in 2027?

The census for 1911 showed the period Cork city mid-terraced home was at that time inhabited by a Bridget O’Donnell, with her servant and that there was one lodger a retired doctor, in the three-storey (plus attic) dwelling.

According the details, all three could read and write; two were Roman Catholic and the third, the retired medic, was Church of Ireland, as marked in the ‘religion’ box.

Might there be another medic, a doctor, nurse or other health professional here in a few years’ more time once it’s in new hands? Many options are open, given its location near the Mercy and Bon Secours hospitals, as well as UCC, and indeed the city centre widens out a few hundred metres away at the Grand Parade.

Dating to the late 1800s, the three-bed terraced home is listed with a 21st century €440,000 AMV via agent Trevor O’Sullivan of Lisney Sotheby’s Real Estate who says it’s charming, has been remodelled yet has kept its period appeal and feel, and comes with an enclosed rear patio/courtyard as ”a private urban oasis.’

It’s near the Tyndall Institute, the acclaimed Paradiso restaurant which landed up here over 30 years ago, as well as bars and entertainment complexes.

It  may be bought as a private home; a buyer can avail of Rent a Room tax reliefs; or, if an investor purchases it’s free of rent caps as it’s not a rental right now, notes Lisney’s Mr O’Sullivan.

South facing, it has River Lee views from the front and is near the completed apartment complex Lancaster Gate, where there’s a good tenure mix including the city’s first cost rental homes: the top resale there was a remarkable €1m paid for an apartment, No 19, in 2020, also sold by Lisney during the pandemic’s height.

No 3’s selling agent says a recent makeover “has breathed new life into the property,” with a new kitchen and carpets, good bathroom with bath and shower at first floor level to the back, while the front mid-level room is the largest bedroom, or could be a bright living room with river views.

The top floor has two more bedrooms plus there’s stairs to an attic level room for storage/other uses.

Lofty No 3 has some exposed brick work, working shutters, fireplaces and gas fired central heating (the BER’s an F though), as well as high ceilings.
VERDICT: An original dwelling, updated, with the city and all of its facilities at its feet.
