Communities all over Ireland are invited to participate in this year’s Trick or Treat for Sick Children campaign.

Organised by the Children’s Health Foundation in partnership with MiWadi, this campaign asks individuals, families, schools and other groups to host a party for Halloween and raise funds for the children’s hospitals at Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght and Connolly in the process.

  • To get involved, all you do is sign up at childrenshealth.ie/trickortreat or call 01 709 1700.
  • You will then be sent a free party pack containing stickers, a poster and a collection box, and tips on organising a monster bash for your guests.

Over the Red-Brick Chimney, by Una Leavy
Over the Red-Brick Chimney, by Una Leavy

Gorgeous book for young nature fans

As the seasons turn and migratory birds prepare to depart for warmer climes for the winter months, now is a great time to read Over the Red-Brick Chimney to your little ones.

This story by Una Leavy, with enchanting illustrations by Shannon Bergin, tells the enchanting tale of Little Goose.

As she’s flying over Ireland, a sudden storm separates Little Goose from her flock. Her wing is damaged and she falls from the sky into the farmyard of a boy named Finn. He looks after her and the pair develop a loving bond.

When the flock pass by again in the spring, Little Goose has recovered enough to join them. But she never forgets Finn and visits the house with the red brick chimney every time she passes on her annual winter migration.

This story will open children’s eyes to the wonders of nature. It’s available in hardback for €13.99

Space Week Ireland

Space Week Ireland, which takes place from October 4 to October 10, aims to inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts. This annual celebration is coordinated by MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory, and several events are taking place in Cork City.

One is a talk with astronaut Steve Swanson, scheduled for Saturday, October 5, in the Cork School of Music. On the day, there will also be interactive workshops and displays to explore.

There’s a special competition to enter too. A star system some 3,000 lightyears away is about to become visible to the naked eye here on Earth. It’s called a nova, which means new in Latin because it will seem like a new star in the sky to us. It will only be visible for a few days, and everyone is being asked to scan the skies for it, take a picture, and share their images on Instagram using the hashtag #NovaHunt. The competition winner will receive a family pass to Blackrock Castle Observatory and a pack filled with Space Week goodies.

  •  To find out more about how to spot this constellation, enter the competition and view the full range of Space Week Ireland events, visit spaceweek.ie
