Iconic Cork City retail outlet to be reborn as jewellers

In addition to housing Gino's ice cream, 22 St Patrick's Street has been home to a Vodafone shop in recent years. Older citizens still refer to it as Cudmores.
An iconic Cork City retail outlet is to be reborn as a jewellers.
Most recently functioning as an ice cream parlour, the site in question is the well-known Cudmore's shop, located at 22 St Patrick's Street.
In addition to housing Gino's ice cream, it has been home to a Vodafone shop in recent years, but is best-known among Corkonians for the eye-catching colourful displays in its iconic, classic days as Cudmores.
Located on the corner of St Patrick Street and Winthrop Street, this latest redevelopment is proposed by Neve Jewels IE Ltd.
It would see the installation of a new painted timber entrance door, the painting of the existing shopfront to black, and the painting of railings too.
As reported in last week's Irish Examiner, the shop is to open under the Austen & Blake jewellery banner.
Council planners have until mid-November to decide on the planning application regarding the site's new look.
Elsewhere in Cork, planning has been granted for the construction of nine new homes in a city suburb.
Coleman New Homes has been granted permission for the works, which will take place at Gleann Iris in Rathpeacon, Killeens.
The works include nine two-storey homes, comprising eight semi-detached units and one detached dwelling.
There will be amendments to constructed roads and footpaths, and the addition of eight shared car parking spaces to serve four of the houses.
Meanwhile, a former nursing home is set to be revamped as residential accommodation in a busy Cork town.
Fermoy SNH Ltd has applied for planning permission from Cork County Council for a change-of-use of the former Strawhill Nursing Home in Fermoy.
The project involves the change of use of a former nursing home to include eight residential apartments. Of those, five will be two-bed units, two will be three-bed units, and one will be a four-bed unit.
Minor building alterations are also required, as is the addition of a new wastewater treatment unit.
