Liam Neeson will star in a major Irish-American production set to be filmed in Limerick next month.

A source confirmed to the Irish Examiner that the actor best known for his roles in the Taken trilogy, Schindler’s List, and Love Actually, will lead the cast of the dark heist comedy 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank.

Adapted from the comic book by Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss, and directed by Frankie Shaw, the picture will transform the streets of Limerick into 1990s America.

The Ballymena-born star will play former bank robber Danny, whose teenage granddaughter Paige means the world to him. When the teen overhears Danny’s former crimimal associates are forcing him to help them pull one last job, she enlists her three best friends to rob a bank.

Produced by Wild Atlantic Pictures, the movie will star Talia Ryder ( Never Rarely Sometimes Always), Noah Jupe ( A Quiet Place), Whitney Peak ( Gossip Girl), Jack Dylan Grazer ( It) and Deacon Phillippe — Reese Witherspoon’s son.

The project will also be in collaboration with Film in Limerick and Robbers Productions DAC, who will help with set design and the sourcing of vintage vehicles.

To facilitate filming, several roads will be closed in Limerick city centre on December 2 from 8am to 4pm, including Upper Denmark Street, Robert Street, Little Gerald Griffin Street and Cornmarket Row.

A notice shared by the council earlier this month noted that other roads in the Pery Square area will be closed from December 2 to 6 to facilitate the production.

This reinforces the Midwest’s position as a serious location in Europe for film and TV productions.

Another major production, Bonhoeffer (previously titled God’s Spy) was filmed in locations throughout Limerick in January 2023, transforming the city into Second World War Germany.

Directed by Todd Komarnicki, Bonhoeffer was released in the US last Friday and ranked in fourth place in the weekend box office. The movie will be released in Ireland in March with its premiere set to be held in Limerick.
