A Cork count centre staffer has become, for many, the face of the election thanks to his quirky choice of novelty t-shirts.

On Saturday, it was a red t-shirt with the slogan, ‘Maybe I like the misery’. On Sunday, it was red again, this time with the slogan ‘No better buachaill’. Cian O'Connor's image has now appeared on various Irish media platforms, but also overseas.

“What you find is that it’s quite a serious business, the election count, so it’s always nice to brighten the room a little bit with a bit of colour and a funny t-shirt,” he said.

“There's a bit of misery, but there is also a lot of fun in it.”

He has a wide range of options, thanks to the Hairy Baby t-shirt company, and picks a new one each morning based on his mood after what might have been a long, hard day at the count centre.

“It depends on how wrecked you are from the night before, or how close you are to the finish,” he said.

At the local and European elections last June, he also showed off his range of novelty tops. One had 'some craic' written across it.

He also had one with 'Jesus! Look at the time' underneath an image of Jesus looking at a digital time stamp.

Come Monday morning, he’ll start planning his next range of t-shirts which count staff, and Ireland’s new TDs, hope won’t be for several years.
