A man armed with a hammer smashed windows and damaged a garda vehicle at a Cork City garda station early on Wednesday morning in the second recent attack there.

The man smashed windows at the front of Gurranabraher garda station in the north side of Cork City before getting around to the back of the station and damaging a garda vehicle there. The suspect was arrested and is currently in custody.

It is the second time this year that the station was targeted. A garda patrol car was also damaged there in April. It is also the third time someone has gone to the station with weapons in about two years, one source said.

“You don’t bargain for someone arriving with weapons in the middle of the night,” a source said.

“Gardaí were alerted to an incident of criminal damage that occurred at approximately 1am at the Gurranabraher Garda Station, County Cork, 4th December 2024,” a statement from garda headquarters said.

“A man in his 30s was arrested and charged and is due to appear in Cork District Court today. As this is now a matter for the Cork District Court, An Garda Síochána is not in a position to provide further comment.”

In April, a man smashed up a garda vehicle at the same station. Gardaí arrested a suspect in connection with a criminal damage incident outside Gurranabraher Garda Station on April 26. The man, aged in his 30s, appeared before the courts later that morning.
