Cork man accused of burglary had bleeding thumb and was 'caught red-handed', court hears

The case against 34-year-old Barry Walsh was heard at Cork District Court.
A man was literally caught red-handed at a burglary as a back window of a house was smashed and he was found intoxicated at the scene and bleeding from his left thumb.
These were the allegations made by Detective Sergeant Kieran O’Sullivan in the case against 34-year-old Barry Walsh, of 19 Glencree Crescent, Mayfield, Cork, at Cork District Court.
Det Sgt O’Sullivan arrested the defendant for the offence of burglary in the early hours of this morning at an unoccupied house for sale at Rathcooney Road, Cork.
He also charged him with driving a car to the scene without the permission of the relative who owned the car.
The detective said the owner of the house was alerted by Phonewatch sensors that were activated during the incident.
The owner arrived quickly and awaited the arrival of the gardaí. He parked his car to block the stolen car parked in the driveway of his home. Gardaí arrived find Barry Walsh, intoxicated, sitting in his relative’s car at the scene of the burglary.
There was blood on the smashed back window of the house and Mr Walsh was bleeding from his left thumb.
The accused admitted to gardaí that he had a serious alcohol problem.
Defence solicitor Shane Collins Daly said: “There was no sophistication to this … He drank yesterday and got himself into this bother, to put it mildly.”
In his bail application, Barry Walsh said: “It won’t happen again. I can’t leave it happen again.”
Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail and remanded Mr Walsh in custody until December 16, saying, “I am concerned about the seriousness of the charges, the nature of the evidence and that he was effectively caught red-handed.”
