A 33-year-old man who stole a pair of wellington boots in TK Maxx at the height of the summer made his detection a little easier for gardaí when he turned up elsewhere to carry out more shoplifting a few days later — wearing the wellies.

These two crimes and a third incident of shoplifting where he stole a pair of sliders from a sports shop have now resulted in a total jail term of five months being imposed on him.

Nelson Jumbo of Cork Simon Community pleaded guilty to three counts of theft at Cork District Court. Sergeant Aisling Murphy outlined the offences committed by the accused.

On July 23, he stole the €70 pair of wellington boots from TK Maxx, Cornmarket Street, Cork. Five days later on July he stole €55 worth of kitchenware at Homesense on Grand Parade.

Finally, on August 18 he went next door to JD Sports on Grand Parade and stole a €45 pair of sliders.

Sgt Murphy said the accused had 58 previous convictions — 21 of them for theft.

Joseph Cuddigan, solicitor, said the accused was pleading guilty to the three charges at the earliest opportunity.

He said Mr Jumbo was wearing the wellies stolen in the first incident when he turned up for his second theft “which made it easy to identify him”. Judge Treasa Kelly imposed a total sentence of five months on Nelson Jumbo for the three offences.
