A 15-year-old who is accused of stealing a car in September and travelling in another stolen car in October was charged on Thursday with smashing the window of car parked at Mahon Point shopping centre.
Garda Karen Ring objected to bail being granted to the 15-year-old. He was arrested for smashing the rear window of a car parked in the Tesco carpark at Mahon Point just after 12 noon on Wednesday, December 4.
The 15-year-old was seen on CCTV smashing the window with a vice-grips and leaving the scene with another youth. They were arrested by gardaí on a bus near the scene.
Garda Ring objected to bail as the accused was already on bail on a charge of stealing a car on September 26 and travelling in another stolen car on October 15/16. Garda Ring said she strongly believed the 15-year-old would commit further serious offences if granted bail again.
Judge Treasa Kelly released the 15-year-old on further bail. Again, he is required to keep a curfew to be at home from 9pm each night until 6am, to stay away from the southside of Cork city and not to have any contact with a number of co-accused.
The new case was then adjourned until December 20 at a sitting of the juvenile court. The defendant cannot be identified as he is under the age of 18.
Later on Thursday, a co-accused was charged with the same offence of causing criminal damage to the car at Mahon Point. There was no application for bail in this 15-year-old’s case as his family had raised particular concerns about him being on bail.
Judge Treasa Kelly remanded him in detention to Oberstown centre in Dublin until December 6, when it is anticipated he may be remanded in further detention.
