A district court judge told two women who admitted to stealing just over €1,000 worth of property from a pharmacy in Ballincollig that “there is absolutely no excuse to steal that value of goods from a pharmacy”.
34-year-old Victoria Sava of Maryville Cottages, Old Youghal Road, Cork, already had two convictions for theft when she pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing the property.
Her accomplice, 18-year-old Argentina Rostas of 30 Ballyhooley Road, Cork, had no previous convictions.
Dennis Healy, solicitor, said the defendants both used some of the stolen products and “gave the rest away as presents”.
Mr Healy said that in fairness to the 18-year-old she had gathered the full amount of compensation for the pharmacy since the matter was last adjourned. And she had never been in any kind of trouble before.
Judge Mary Dorgan imposed a €250 fine on the 18-year-old accused, adding: “The only reason she is escaping without a prison sentence is that she has paid compensation in full.”
For 34-year-old Victoria Sava, Judge Dorgan imposed a sentence of three months suspended. It was suspended on condition that she would stay out of trouble for the next two years.
“It is up to her to stay out of trouble,” Judge Dorgan warned.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis said the charge against each woman was that on June 30 at Hickey’s pharmacy, Ballincollig shopping centre, they did steal €1,006 worth of property.
Garda Niall McGrath charged both women with the theft.
